A Few Things to Know before You Try the Bird’s Nest Soup

In Asian cultures – specifically in the Eastern part – the bird’s nest soup happens to be more than a mere delicacy. It is a medicinal concoction, if you will, with several benefits like helping with digestion and strengthening your immune system. Apart from that, it is supposed to improve your sex drive. The last one happens to be the unique selling point of the product. You may think how come a few twigs and leaves have such magical power. After all, they are supposed to be the main ingredients of the nest, right?

Well, you are wrong. Before you buy bird nest it is important to know that these nests are made from bird saliva that has hardened and dried. Yes, you heard that right. When you are drinking the soup, you are having a bowl of spit combined with other ingredients. It may sound rather disgusting, but it is not. Perhaps, it could depend on your tastes and preference for food. The thing is that there are plenty of people who frown upon the product. These nests are created by birds known as swiftlets. These are small birds found mainly in Southeast Asia.

They dwell in caves, and when you get these nests from the wild it also harms the lives of the species. It is the reason why conservationists do not like to have soup. However, this does not mean that the demand for this soup is any less. In places like Hong Kong, there is high demand for soup, and other dishes made using the bird’s nest. However, the supply is much lower than the demand. Hence, the product can get so expensive over here.
